Dear {{ FirstName | default: 'friends' }},
“The Declaration of Independence stated that all men and women are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights, and that governments exist to protect and defend those rights.”
Pope Francis
Welcome to the Independence Day issue of our newsletter during a most perilous time in our country's history.
Today, many of us are feeling far less independent. The far-right, corrupt-to-its-core, unqualified Supreme Court dealt another blow to our Constitution this week.
By ruling Donald Trump has immunity from the dozens of crimes he committed during his presidency, the justices again showed us all how far they will go to promote the MAGA agenda. Simply pathetic.
Please help us stand up to the MAGA right. A contribution of any size will enable us to continue promoting our positive message of the Common Good for all Americans and to reach out to the multi-issue Catholic voters who will make a difference in this election.

Catholics Vote Common Good in the Media
|
With President Joe Biden facing growing public pressure to step aside after last week's debate, prominent upstate New York Democrats are divided on the question.
Democrats are divided over whether President Biden should continue campaigning for reelection or pass the baton to someone else. Biden's family used a weekend gathering at Camp David to urge him to stay in the race.
Denise Murphy McGraw is the national co-chair of Catholics Vote Common Good.
"There's no disputing that President Biden did not have a good night the other night. It was clear. It was visible to all of us. It was a painful hour and a half, I will say, though, as probably, I say with great confidence, as one of the only people in the considerable WAMC listening area that has had a conversation directly with the leader of the free world over the last few months, when I spoke to him and when I was with him in person, he knew what day it was, he knew who I was, he knew why he was there. He was the leader of the free world. So I am not concerned in the least about his capacity or all these things that people are now saying," said Murphy McGraw.

Catholics Vote Common Good Partners with Sojourners to Offer "Poll Chaplain" Training
|
Catholics Vote Common Good partner in Faiths Protecting Democracy, Sojourners, is an ecumenical Christian media and advocacy organization that works towards social and racial justice. Sojourners publishes an award-winning magazine, produces daily news and commentary on sojo.net, and mobilizes people of faith for social justice through its advocacy initiative SojoAction.
We invite interfaith and multicultural faith leaders –lay and clergy – to protect vulnerable voters. During a time when voting rights are facing significant challenges, the role of poll chaplains becomes ever more critical. Poll chaplains emerge as crucial facilitators of fair and equitable voting, upholding the pillars of democracy for every community.
During the 2024 election season, we will be working in the following 10 key states: ALABAMA, ARIZONA, FLORIDA, GEORGIA, MICHIGAN, NORTH CAROLINA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, TEXAS, and WISCONSIN.
If you are a resident in any of these states, please join our work. Even if you are not a resident in these states but are interested in defending democracy, we still encourage you to apply. Applicants will have the opportunity for training for civic engagement as a member of the faith community.
Empower yourself and begin the journey to become a poll chaplain for the upcoming election!

|
This week, The Washington Post mined the U.S. Religious Census, a decennial count of America’s faithful, for insights into the geography of religious devotion. We also compare people’s claims on church attendance to their actual behavior.

May you have a blessed July 4th.
All our best,
